Mayra Aguiar, lone star judo heavyweight
Among all categories of female judo, the light-heavyweight (-78 kg) draws attention to Brazil because only one athlete - the young Mayra Aguiar - appear in the global ranking of the sport, while the other weights the country has at least three representatives. The explanation for this phenomenon, using the technique of the female Brazilian, Rosicler Fields, has a name: Edinanci Silva.
- The heavyweight is a category that had no incentive because of the presence of long Edinanci, who was powerful and sovereign. For me, this is the explanation for the shortage of athletes - the trainer said, stressing that Mayra category rose because of the injury he suffered in his right knee in late 2008, and also because it was in the growth phase.
At 19, Mayra, silver in the middleweight category (-70 kg) in the Pan Rio-2007, and silver in the heavyweight in the World Tokyo-2010, agrees with Rosicler. How could overcome any judoka Edinanci, all sought other categories.
The lack of athletes in the heavyweight turns out to be a difficulty for Mayra face. Without companions weight, she's forced to train with the judo athletes in middle or heavyweight (+78 kg), or with the men's half-lightweight (-66 kg) or light (-73 kg).
- But is not the same thing than training with someone of my weight. It hinders my training, but it's something I have to deal with. Fortunately, now I come to training and competing overseas, so I will have the opportunity to fight with my rivals in the category - said Mayra, who will compete this weekend at the Masters Judo, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The lack of athletes can also generate an accommodation of the judoka in the battle for Olympic place:
- I am well ranked, but had to take someone along. With another judoka, is a healthy challenge, encouraging one another.
