Enquanto em todo o Brasil já está em ritmo de Carnaval, a seleção de judô está em Guayaquil, no Equador, para a disputa da Copa Pan-Americana, evento que conta pontos para a classificação aos Jogos Pan-Americanos de Guadalajara 2011. A Copa Pan-Americana tem início nesta sexta-feira e são esperados 21 países e, aproximadamente, 170 judocas, entre eles potências do judô continental como Cuba, Argentina e Colômbia.
O Brasil disputa a Copa Pan-Americana com 14 judocas. O time feminino será comandado pelo técnico Carlos Hespanha e terá Taciana Lima (48kg), Andressa Fernandes (52kg), Ketleyn Quadros (57kg), Mariana Silva (63kg), Maria Portela (70kg), Nádia Merly (78kg) e Maria Suelen Althemam (+78kg). Já os homens têm como técnico Mario Sabino e estão escalados com Daniel Moraes (60kg), Luis Revite (66kg), Marcelo Contini (73kg), Nacif Elias (81kg), Rodrigo Luna (90kg), Alex Aguiar (100kg) e João Gabriel Schlittler (+100kg).
Segundo a programação do evento, na sexta-feira acontecem os combates nas categorias 63kg, 70kg, 78kg, +78kg, 81kg, 90kg, 100kg e +100kg. No sábado, entram no tatame os atletas dos pesos 44kg, 48kg, 52kg, 57kg, 55kg, 60kg, 66kg e 73kg.
"Estou me sentindo bem preparada para esta Copa Pan-Americana, principalmente pelos treinos que fizemos na Europa. Dentro do nosso continente, a rivalidade com Cuba é muito grande, justamente por ser um país tradicional no judô e que bate de frente com o Brasil", diz Maria Suellen Altheman (+78kg), bronze no último fim de semana na Copa do Mundo de Praga.
Bronze no Campeonato Mundial de 2007, o peso pesado João Gabriel Schlittler é outro atleta que espera reencontrar um adversário cubano na competição.
"Como fiquei praticamente dois anos afastado por ter sofrido uma lesão no joelho, perdi um pouco desse contato com os adversários pan-americanos. Cuba sempre teve uma equipe muito homogênea e, quem sabe, vou ter a chance de lutar com o Oscar Brayson, que além de ser medalhista olímpico foi bronze no Grand Slam de Paris 2011. Com certeza será uma luta que vou usar como referência neste meu retorno aos tatames", afirma João Gabriel.

"I feel well prepared for this Pan-American Cup, especially the training we did in Europe. Within our continent, the rivalry with Cuba is great, because it is a traditional country in judo and collides with Brazil "says Mary Suellen Altheman (+78 kg), bronze in last weekend's World Cup in Prague.
Bronze in the 2007 World Championships, the heavyweight John Gabriel Schlittler is another athlete who hopes to rediscover a Cuban opponent in the competition.
"How did I get away almost two years after suffering a knee injury, lost a bit of contact with the pan-American opponents. Cuba has always had a very homogeneous team and maybe I'll have the chance to fight with Oscar Brayson, that besides being was bronze medalist at the Grand Slam in Paris 2011. It will certainly be a fight I will use as reference in my return to the mats, "says João Gabriel.
